High Anxiety

The opening of this discussion should catch you just as much as it caught me.  Mary Hynes opens with a statistic:  the average high school student today has the same anxiety level as the average psychiatric patient in 1950.

Based on what I see at any given university, I would concur.  Students I know carry an enormous amount of anxiety with them – at times, even crippling amounts.

So why is this?  One reason offered is because our ideas of happiness have become so outlandish and unrealistic, the pursuit of them makes us a nervous wreck.  Interesting thought. . . but again, this is just one notion discussed in the interview.
